Dressed Timber: Precision, Performance & Natural Beauty

When material and finish begin to define a space.

What is Dressed Timber?

Our re-sawn timber is straight off the saw mill, which typically have blade makes, small variation in sizing, and a coarse texture. On the other hand dressed timber, involves an additional process, to produce a smooth, clean, and consistent surface on one or more sides.

To dress our recycled hardwood, timber is passed through a specific machine with cutting knives. This machining process refines the timber to highly accurate dimensions while creating a smooth, consistent surface that is pleasant to touch and ready for refined applications.

Unlike rough-sawn timber, which carries a more immediate and tactile expression, dressed hardwood sits more comfortably in interiors and exposed architectural applications where alignment, proportion, and clean lines matter.

It is not about removing character—it is about deciding how much of that character remains visible.

Why Dress Timber?

Dressing timber is not just about appearance—it’s about precision, usability, and performance.

For example, when joining timber—such as laminated tabletops —the edges must be perfectly straight and even. Dressing ensures these surfaces align seamlessly, allowing for strong, accurate joins.

It also enhances the timber’s natural beauty. The process reveals the true colour and grain, while still retaining character features such as gum veins, nail marks and other natural markings that make recycled hardwood so unique.

Where is Dressed Timber Used?

Dressed timber is most commonly used where accuracy and smooth finish are essential.

Common Applications:

  • Furniture and cabinetry
  • Wall linings and interior features
  • Decking profiles
  • Laminated components (e.g. table tops)
  • Precision structural elements

Smaller timber profiles are ideal for dressing, as they can be efficiently processed through planing machinery to achieve a clean, refined finish.

Large Timbers & Structural Applications

When it comes to large posts and beams, dressing becomes a more specialised process.

Machining large structural timbers requires heavy-duty equipment and is typically more costly. However, it plays a crucial role in applications where precision is critical—such as bespoke prefabricated trusses with hidden fixings.

In these cases, dressing ensures tight tolerances and clean finishes, allowing components to fit together seamlessly during installation.

More commonly, with larger dimensions beams are manually wire brushed.

Finishes & Maintenance

Choosing the right finish is just as important as the timber itself.

We provide detailed guidance to ensure finishes are suited to how the timber will be used—not just how it looks on day one.

For external and exposed applications, a penetrating natural oil such as Osmo is recommend to protect the timber while enhancing its natural appearance.

Finish, and What It Changes

While “dressed” refers to the machining process, it is the finish that defines how the timber is experienced when installed in its new life.

A rough-sawn surface retains a sense of immediacy. Saw marks remain visible, the grain is more pronounced, and the texture engages more directly with light and touch.

A more refined dressed finish introduces a quieter, more controlled presence. Edges become cleaner, surfaces more consistent, and the overall look more resolved. These finishes are typically suited to interiors, joinery, and spaces where the timber is handled and touched more frequently.

More expressive treatments—such as live edges—reintroduce variation and irregularity. When used selectively, they can anchor a space, particularly in elements like mantels, shelving, or feature joinery.

Each finish carries a different weight within a space. The decision is less about preference, and more about how the timber is intended to perform—both visually and functionally.
